GIZ and German Red Cross joining hands for school sanitation

The German Red Cross (GRC), working in Vietnam for many years on school sanitation issues, and WMP have agreed to cooperate on the improvement of school latrines by adding a wastewater treatment.

GRC have expressed their interest in learning from the WMP’s experiences on decentralized wastewater treatment in schools. WMP has implemented decentralised treatment systems in Bac Ninh, Vinh and Can Tho. In Vinh City, the treatment plant clarifies wastewater from a school toilet and a kindergarten nearby.

School_latrine_in_Mo_Dao_BN_2009_sSchool Latrine in Mo Dao“We wish to develop a standardised treatment system for our school toilets, and we believe that the Wastewater Management Programme has a lot to contribute” said Frank Kueppers, GRC Country Representative. Teams of GRC and WMP are currently working together on the design of those standardised school toilet buildings with integrated wastewater treatment system.

Frank Pogade, CTA of Component 3 - WMP, believes this might further spread the idea of low-cost and simple sanitation. He said: “Of course treatment systems for school toilets cannot be compared with sophisticated high-technology plants. But they do reduce the environmental pollution and – most importantly–  will be minimizing health risks for school children.”

A first Project for getting the cooperation started has been selected in Bac Giang Province.
