GIZ and MoC took part in the IWA Conference on Decentralised Wastewater Management in Asia

From 18 to 24 November, 2012, representatives from GIZ and Ministry of Construction took part in the ConferenceDewat Con India croppedMoC and GIZ representatives at the Conference on Decentralised Wastewater Management in Asia which was which was held in Nagpur, India by the International Water Association (IWA) in collaboration with BORDA, CDD Society (CDD), GIZ, NEERI and Indian Water Works Association. More than 200 delegates from 30 different countries attended this three-day event.   

In total, 50 oral presentations were presented in 15 sessions along with 18 poster presentations. These presentations covered the following topics: 

  • Policies, standards and regulation
  • Planning
  • Management
  • Technological developments
  • Design and construction
  • FinancingIMG 1455WMP expert presented the Poster  to the participants
  • Stakeholder engagement
  • Ensuring sustainability 

Supporting the concept of Decentralized Wastewater Management, WMP contributed a poster presentation on Linking Decentralized Waste Water Treatment and Capacity Building – Experiences in Vietnam.

The Conference is a good opportunity for GIZ and MoC to get more understanding about how decentralized wastewater management option has been applied in various countries to enhance sanitation coverage and service delivery and bring about cost-effective means for wastewater treatment. There were a lot of experiences sharing and lessons learned and exchanged in terms of technical, management and legal aspects at the event.

The technical visits to decentralized wastewater treatment systems in Nagpur at Vocational Training Center – Lonara and Mahajan Nagar Community provided a good demonstration on how DeWAT works in practice and how the community can involve and make contribution.
