The recent study conducted by the Wastewater Management Programme (WMP) in collaboration with the partners in nine provinces and cities of Vietnam shows that benefits resulting from investments in wastewater and drainage infrastructure exceed the economic costs by at least 15%.

The nine provinces and cities taking part in this Study are: Can Tho, Soc Trang, Tra Vinh, Nghe An, Bac Ninh, Hai Duong, Lang Son, Hoa Binh and Son La. The study is to: (i) assess economic performance of improved wastewater management (WWM) in nine provincial towns and cities, (ii) estimate the economic and financial benefits of improved WWM, and (iii) provide recommendations relating to the future development of WWM.

A detailed report was prepared for each province and summary report outlines the main results from the study. The results of the study provides national and provincial leaders with insights about the expected benefits and outcomes relative to increased investment in the sector. Furthermore, it provides policy makers the evidence-based data, information and analysis they need to make decision on the level of investment in urban wastewater given socio-economic conditions.

The study examined benefits from tourism, improved health, land prices as well as the environment. Mr. Hanns-Bernd Kuchta, Programme Manager said, “Clearly, our research indicates that investments in wastewater and drainage infrastructure promotes tourism, boosts land values, and protects the environment. In addition, improved hygiene diminishes morbidity and mortality caused by water-associated diseases. Each 3 dollars of investment in wastewater and drainage infrastructure yields at least 4 dollars, so national and provincial leaders can be assured that increasing annual budget allocated to the wastewater sector will play an important role in enhancing socio-economic development.”
